Samenvatting

Through this operational test, Mn/DOT hopes to determine whether the low-cost active train warning system functions as well as traditional active railroad grade crossings at low-volume highway-railroad intersections; and to determine whether the low cost system's addition of flashers or variable message signs on advance rail warning signs provides any additional benefits. If successful the proposed system offers the opportunity to install low cost active warning systems at thousands of crossings nation wide. Such a deployment would have significant safety benefits. By leveraging emerging technologies, passive rail crossings can be converted to active at a cost previously thought unthinkable.
