Maintaining lane position during low-visibility conditions can be a challenge for most snow removal operators. Providing continuous and accurate lane position information to complement existing roadway cues may be the solution to increase driver situation awareness, and reduce crash involvement. This paper presents a system-based approach to the design of an operator interface for a Lane Awareness System for Snow Removal Operations. Findings suggest that the interface should be designed as an 'aid' rather than as a 'primary' display. Since drivers do not have the visual resources for a dedicated display, the visual display should be augmented with peripheral visual signals or haptic cues such as seat vibrations. Operators also need a flexible system, with adjustable thresholds for all warnings. These design recommendations led to the prototype user interface presented in this paper.
