AA research of a representative sample of more than 1000 motorists in 1993 shows that about a third of its (now) 9.3m members are also cyclists, either for leisure or utility journeys. Last year the AA conducted another survey - of 687 AA members - and asked whether they cycled, for what purpose, about their other travel patterns and views on a series of transport issues. These surveys therefore identify who the AA cycling motorists are and provides insights into their habits and behaviours. The paper assesses the likely numbers of: (1) motorists who don't cycle and probably never will; (2) motorists who don't cycle now but may be persuaded in the future for leisure trips; (3) motorists who don't cycle now but may be persuaded to in the future instead of using the car; (4) motorists who cycle now for leisure-only journeys and who may be persuaded to cycle trips they currently use the car for; and (5) motorists who use the bike instead of the car for some journeys and may be encouraged to do this more often. The paper discusses the opportunities for targeting these groups and looks at issues that may discourage motorists from forgoing the car for the bike.
