Auxiliary lanes on two-lane roads perform two important functions (1) overcoming delays caused by slow vehicles on grades, and (2) breaking up bunches caused by inadequate overtaking opportunities over an extended length of road. While the first function has been recognised for many years, the use of auxiliary lanes for overtaking purposes is a new development A review of overtaking lane design practice in Canada and Australia is presented.
