Limitations on road funding together with the need for interim relief on two lane, two way rural highways prior to duplication have led to development of a strategy of systematically implementing overtaking lanes providing short three lane cross sections at regular intervals on selected rural highways in Victoria. Reports identified the best locations "on the ground" in line with the recommended overall spacings for overtaking lanes. Current planning will lead to overtaking lanes becoming a routine traffic relief measure on rural state highways in Victoria.
