Some models of overtaking on rural roads are described and analyzed. A two lane two way rural road without intersections is considered. On such a road vehicles in one lane are influenced by vehicles in the other lane. In particular a vehicle in one lane wishing to overtake a slower vehicle must travel some distance in the other lane; this is possible only when there is a sufficient gap to the nearest oncoming vehicle when an overtaking is started and there is sufficient visibility to determine whether the gap is sufficient.
