This article provides an overview of the elderly driver, providing information on the number of older drivers in different age groups, driving frequency, traffic violations, motor vehicle crashes and fatalities. Current policies in the United States and Canada regarding the assessment of specific medical conditions and impairment are reviewed; different aspects of these conditions, including maintaining patient independence, public safety, and the role of the physician in evaluation also are discussed. Relevant issues to medicolegal considerations, particularly those concerning physician liability, also are addressed. (A)
