When evaluating injury outcomes, measures are needed that contain a qualitative judgment regarding the relative importance to the individual or to society of the various aspects of function and disability that may be affected because of the outcome under evaluation. These qualitative judgments are referred to as "preferences." Preference-based measures reflect the relationship between impairment, functional limitation, and disability and the individual's (or society's) overall level of well-being and satisfaction with life. This paper focuses on the measurement of these qualitative assessments.
