Samenvatting

Roundabouts are often used now, producing both a dramatic reduction in the number of accidents and a better traffic operation. However, (mini-)roundabouts appear to have a number of specific characteristics regarding layout and traffic control. As a consequence of this, the installation of road lighting is difficult at roundabouts. Therefore, NSVV (De Nederlandse Stichting voor Verlichtingskunde) has taken the initiative to publish 'Recommendations for the lighting of roundabouts', based on results of research. This paper presents a first draft of these recommendations. Three important recommendations are: (1) eight lampposts are usually needed in order to guarantee the round form of the roundabout; (2) the lampposts should be placed on the outside of the roundabout in order to guarantee a clear visibility of traffic, especially of slow traffic; and (3) the level of lighting of at least 10 lux is required.
