Urban local governments continue to be faced with the challenge of pacifying local streets. Local area traffic management, traffic calming, street scaping, pacifying streets, are terms used to describe traffic initiatives that are designed to make them safer for all road users (not just motorists) and create an environment that promotes responsible driving behaviour. A wide range of measures can be employed for this purpose - both active and passive, each with varying degrees of effectiveness. Logan City Council has used many of the standard treatments. Concrete splitter islands have been used at many intersections, but many of the physical treatments, particularly those using re-cast concrete pacifying treatments such as modified "T" intersections, have created operational problems issues with other road users, particularly longer and low floor buses.
