The US Vehicle-Infrastructure Integration (VII) programme aims to improve road safety by installing a new communications architecture on US roads. This is based on a system of IEEE 802.11-based wireless roadside and in-vehicle devices that will enable secure vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside communications. Work is underway on the necessary standards, the onboard unit (OBU) and roadside unit (RSU) prototype design, and build and testing programmes. Funding, deployment and use of the system are yet to be defined. Possible applications include tolling, in-vehicle signage, corridor management, parking fees, traffic information, and traffic signal violation warnings. Ways in which VII might be deployed for tolling are considered.
