Samenvatting

The purpose of this survey on parking and traffic safety was to determine the magnitude and nature of the problem. The report studies which factors have an influence on accidents concerned with parking and being parked. An analysis is made of type of accidents, the circumstances under which the accident has occurred and the influence of the environmental factors on the chance of an accident. This concerns the direct influence of parking on safety. The indirect influence is also studied. This can happen in situations in which parking is the secondary cause of an accident, for instance when a parked car hampers the view. In addition, the influence of parking policy and the spatial use by parking in highly populated residential areas is considered. In such cases it can be possible that required traffic measures to improve traffic safety are not carried out from sheer necessity. Most parking accidents occur by collision with a parked vehicle, 65 percent of parking accidents occur in urban areas. In most cases hit and run drivers are involved. Conclusions are made following the phase-model (1) transport and transport mode phase (2) anticipation phase (3) reaction phase (4) incident phase and (5) accident phase. For the other reports of the survey see B 25815 - B 25817 (IRRD 805474 - 805476).
