The authors have been involved in the development of traffic and parking strategies for several sub-regional and suburban centres. This paper compares the basic characteristics which influence the parking requirements of town centres including floor space, travel mode, and availability of public transport. Essentially the paper is a presentation of results with broad conclusions and observations being drawn on the main variables which affect parking demand including choice of travel mode, parking supply and demand, and the relationships to the size of the centre. It is not intended to be a definitive document on the subject, but rather a summary of observations and findings which could be useful to professionals involved in the planning of town centres. Two case studies are presented in this paper based on the Hornsby and Bankstown Commercial Centres (New South Wales) which are expected to experience significant growth in the future. A closer assessment of factors such as mode choice is made together with the consideration of issues for future public transport requirements in these two centres (A).
