Parking provides a bridge between land use and transport activities. It represents an essential component of the urban transportation systems in cities by enabling access to land-uses by private and commercial vehicles. Parking can be provided and managed to help achieve a range of desirable environmental, economic and social outcomes in cities. However, this requires overall coordination. Parking is often used to encourage other transport outcomes. The control of the supply and price of parking is used to discourage the use of modes like automobiles and encourage the use of public transport. This paper briefly outlines the parking policies and directions taken in Melbourne. It points to the focus of parking policy on local issues with little co-ordination aimed at achieving overall urban goals. This lack of co-ordination does not encourage overall parking strategies which encourage and facilitate appropriate urban development. The paper points to the need for the development of co-ordinated urban, parking and transport strategies to facilitate more sustainable urban areas.
