Traditionally, computer aided drafting (CAD) software has been relegated to pure drafting use when laying out parking lot designs. The process for developing such layouts typically consisted of sketching on tracing paper the schematics for a given parking lot project which is then transferred through tedious means into CAD drawings to produce accurate layouts. This paper examines how an intelligent CAD application can produce huge productivity gains in parking lot design - something road designers have benefited from for over two decades. This benefit was demonstrated through development of alternative parking layouts for a 1400+ stall parking facility at the Vancouver International Airport.
