This paper describes the parking information system for the Heiwajima Parking Area of the Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway. This system consists of a full/vacant information display along the main line, parking state display at the entrance to the parking area, vehicle sensors provided for each parking area, and a controller which counts the number of vehicles detected by the sensors and transmits a forecast of full/vacant display command signal to each display. The availability of the parking area is more than 90% in the daytime which indicates that the parking place is utilized to a satisfactory degree. It has been observed that the ratio of the number of vehicles which use the parking area to the parking capacity is 2.7 times. This shows that the parking area is very efficiently utilized in spite of its parking capacity, that is to say the effect of installation is high. The full/vacant information provided by the information display has the effect of lessening the number of vehicles waiting for a parking space to become available, thereby preventing the occurrence of congestion due to such vehicles.
