In recent years, policy makers have felt an increasing need for innovative, interactive, participatory methods of policy support. A characteristic that these methods have in common is that multiform groups of stakeholders are involved in the analysis and development of policy. These methods are known by various names, such as communicative, participatory, or interactive policy analysis. The aims of this study are scientific and social. Scientific because it wants to make a contribution in searching explanations for the success of trajectories of participatory policy analysis (PPA) and in designing research for that goal. The aim is social because insight in the relation between the design of PPA-trajectories and effectivity should lead to better decision-making and, consequently, to better decisions. (A)
