Samenvatting

This paper documents a partnership between state roading authority and industry. It records the past and current relationship between Transit New Zealand (responsible for the NZ state highway network) and the NZ Roadmarkers Federation (representing roadmarking contractors and their suppliers). The parties have worked together for many years to raise standards in the industry to deliver a safer roading network for drivers. Improvements in delineation standards can often be achieved at modest cost, through good planning and management. More recently the relationship has been formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the parties. A key objective under that Memorandum has been the development of a Five Year Delineation Strategy. The objective of the strategy is to contribute to the NZ Road Safety 2010 Strategy targets, by reducing potential for vehicle crashes and seeks to: 1. improve on-road safety and driver comfort by ensuring adequate delineation on State Highways at all times; 2. produce specifications and guidelines encouraging the best whole-of-life-costs for asset management of on-road delineation. Two years into the programme, several projects have been completed, and the plan has been revised through an annual review process, which identifies new tasks and priorities among the projects. (a)
