Samenvatting

This report reviews the basic principles and concepts of hydraulic flow that need to be considered in the design, construction, and maintenance of pavements. The need for drainage is noted and the sources and movement of water in the pavement are described. The analysis of basic information on highway geometrics, surface drainage systems, nonpavement subsurface drainage systems, climatology, and soil properties is discussed. The design of subsurface drainage (design criteria, removal of free water, filters), the rehabilitation of existing pavements (by longitudinal subdrains), and current installations (new pavements, edge drains) are also described.
