In 1994, VicRoads in conjunction with the Cement and Concrete Association of Australia (C&CAA) and the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association (AAPA) initiated a trial to compare various concrete pavement surface finishes and bituminous surfacings applied to a jointed plain concrete pavement on an arterial road in outer Melbourne. Surface types included exposed aggregate concrete, tyned concrete, dense graded asphalt, open graded asphalt, stone mastic asphalt, slurry surfacing and sprayed seal. Monitoring of performance by VicRoads over the first few years included tyre noise, spray reduction and skid resistance as well as visual rating for progression of reflection cracking at pavement joints and general surface condition. Results from the first three years of monitoring by VicRoads have been previously reported and are summarised in this paper. Monitoring of performance based on visual inspection has been continued by AAPA and this paper records the results of those visual inspections and current surface condition after 12 years of service.
