This paper discusses issues relating to pedestrian and cyclist crashes at urban roundabouts, left turn slip lanes, and other signalised intersections. The paper reports the findings of a private research project that investigated the performance pedestrian and cyclist safety at roundabouts and left turn slip lanes in areas of pedestrian activity in Melbourne. The study examines the overall safety of the facilities as well as the details of pedestrian and cyclist crashes at these facilities at locations with significant pedestrian and cyclist activity. The paper looks into site conditions that might contribute to making roundabouts and slip lanes hazardous for pedestrians and cyclists, and presents options for minimising such hazards and barriers to access for able-bodied and disabled pedestrians. The paper confronts the issues faced by the young, the elderly, and the visually disabled, and suggests design approaches to assist these users.
