Samenvatting

A summary is given of the wide range of ad hoc experimen- tation which has been tried to improve the safety of crossings. The National Roads Board's recently commenced research programme on pedestrian crossing facilities is briefly described. Further directions for improving the safety of pedestrian crossings are put forward. It is concluded that improved pedestrian- driver communication and intervisibility have the greatest potential for immediately improving safety.
