In phase 2 of Advanced Safety Vehicle Project, Mazda is developing ASV-2 based on three technological themes: Firstly, preventative safety technologies that help reduce driver's error through an enhanced human interface between the vehicle and the driver. Secondly, accident avoidance technologies that function as a backup in case of careless mistakes. Thirdly, damage mitigating technologies. Mazda focused on the fact that about 30% of fatal accidents involve pedestrians and that one-third of traffic accidents are rear-end collisions. This paper introduces the concept of comprehensive pedestrian protection technologies and rear-collision injury reduction technologies that were developed and installed on Mazda ASV-2. In addition to the two concepts, from the viewpoint of the human-machine interface technologies, information provision system and warning system are being developed in order to prompt driver action.
