Samenvatting

The paper describes six distinct projects in the field of pedestrian safety, comprising new crossing types, models of accidents and delays at crossing points and a new project to investigate contributory factors in pedestrian accidents. The research on accidents and delays is part of an on-going programme to make crossings safer and more acceptable to both motorists and pedestrians, and to produce up-dated criteria for deciding when, and in what form, a crossing is appropriate at specific locations. Knowledge gained on the factors which contribute to an accident should assist in planning, traffic control and education on road safety. The paper is presented under the following headings: (1) Introduction; (2) Crossing with pedestrian detectors; (3) Crossing with speed control humps; (4) Pedestrian delay models at random crossing points; (5) Accident and casualty models for pedestrian crossings, and (6) Factors which contribute to pedestrian accidents.
