This study is a review of pedestrian safety in South Australia. Pedestrian accident statistics were reviewed to identify the broad issues both in Australia and South Australia and the problems to be addressed. The following areas were investigated: pedestrian movements associated with pedestrian accidents and the physical crossing installations to minimise risk; environmental changes which improve road safety such as street alterations; the impact of speed restrictions on pedestrian safety; the role of alcohol in pedestrian accidents and the difficulties of instignating effective countermeasures; the issues of conspicuity, its role in pedestrian accidents and possible countermeasures; vehicle design and the possible design measures which may minimise pedestrian injuries due to collisions with vehicles; children and the elderly as high risk groups of pedestrians and possible countermeasures; the role of driver behaviour in pedestrian safety; and the role of the mass media in promoting pedestrian safety.
