Samenvatting
The current pedestrian training programme of South Africa is described. Reasons why purely publicity-oriented campaigns are deemed ineffective are given. Some of the main factors leading to pedestrian accidents, such as alcohol abuse, lack of understanding of road signs and regulations, poor street- crossing strategies, inattentiveness, vehicle speeds and others are identified and possible counter-measures are proposed.
