Trafalgar Square in London, UK, was redeveloped under a project called World Squares for All. The challenge was to convert an inhospitable, noisy and polluted area with a high traffic volume into a pleasant and accessibleenvironment that could be enjoyed by pedestrians. The key traffic and movement proposals for phase one of the project are listed. The proposals were extensively modelled using traffic models such as SATURN, TRANSYT and VISSIM. The public consultation process is described. The measures taken to improve pedestrian access and to provide for mobility impaired people and cyclists are discussed.
