Samenvatting

The results of two accident studies carried out to examine the safety of pedestrians and cyclists at roundabouts are described. (1) A "before and after" study of reported pedestrian and cyclist casualty accidents at sites where roundabouts were introduced. The results of this study suggest that the introduction of roundabouts leads to slight reductions in pedestrian casualty accidents and to increases in cyclist casualty accidents. (2) An examination of pedestrian and cyclist casualty accidents at roundabouts in Victoria for a period of 4 years (1980- 1983 inclusive). This study highlights the low frequency of such accidents. The concern for pedestrian and cyclist safety at roundabouts, whilst well- intentioned, is unfounded.
