Samenvatting

This report summarises the main findings from analysis of PENDANT WP2 data that was collected by 8 teams throughout the European Union. The methodology used is fully described in the final report of the PENDANT project (WP2 Final Report) and is therefore not described further here. In total, 1,100 accident cases were investigated as part of the requirements for WP2. These all involved at least one passenger car manufactured after 1998. The collision partners for these vehicles varied somewhat but included other passenger cars, trucks and buses, poles, trees and pedestrians. In some cases, there was no second vehicle or object involved as the vehicle simply rolled over. Following completion of the data collection in December 2005, there was a significant requirement to undertake substantive quality checks on the data as well as manipulate the database in order to produce a number of data files that could be easily used for data analysis. This proved to be a major undertaking but the resultant data files can now be used as easily analysable data sources that should be used to determine future vehicle passive safety policy and regulation within the European Union. Data analyses on a number of specific topics and themes have been conducted by the partners involved in WP2. However, it is considered that these analyses should not be regarded as the definitive end result of PENDANT. The level of detail within the PENDANT data files is so vast that it should be fully exploited and further results produced. The analysis topics that are the subject of Deliverable D11 are those that were judged by the partners to be issues that have current relevance within the European Union. It is expected that other priorities and key topics will emerge during the course of time. This Executive Summary has been prepared to summarise the main findings of data analysis that have been undertaken by the PENDANT partners. Such findings have been produced as separate Reports as follows: (1) General Data Analysis (2) Analysis of Frontal Car-to-Car Collisions - Injury and Compatibility Aspects (3) Analysis of EuroNCAP Effectiveness (4) Rear End Collisions (5) Rollover Crashes (6) Non-Struck Side Crashes (7) Pedestrian Impacts (8) Injury Outcomes in Modern (post 1998) Passenger Cars (9) Injury Costing Analysis.
