Samenvatting

The first stage of a new study of perceptions of personal security on public transport is a literature review. The goal of the review is to provide a context for the quantitative and qualitative research conducted for this study. The study includes a national household interview survey with 2419 respondents. Discussion groups are an integral part of the study. This review draws together data on concerns about crime and security generally, and summarizes research findings that have contributed to the understanding of the causes of these anxieties. Part B of the literature review is specific to perceptions of personal security associated with travelling by public transport. This section draws on the findings from other national studies that have focused on the experience and perceptions of public transport of young people, and those of black, minority ethnic and visible faith communities. Findings are also provided from national research into the impact of personal security issues in pedestrian journeys and the impact of graffiti, vandalism and other environmental nuisance on the public transport environment.
