Samenvatting

This article discusses the visual needs of the automobile driver at night. There are two chief requirements. First, he must be able to detect the presence of obstacles from a sufficiently long distance. A summary of the results of research on visibility distances of objects is given, and these are related to criteria for safety. The second requirement is that the driver should be able to see the road itself adequately. Again, suitable criteria for this are discussed. It is suggested that we know very little about how these two sets of criteria can be satisfied.
