Interaction of subliminal effects in time and area domain are discussed in terms of coincidence requirements in functional area and time units. These requirements change with the adaptation conditions of the retina. Particularly with increasing brightness more quanta needed for an express signal to the cortex. The steeper increase of subjective brightness when adapted to higher luminances is considered to be due to this larger quantum demand for another action potential. Scaling by a factorequal to the square-root of the input eliminates the statistical fluctuations without significant less in accuracy of visual perception. Some consequences of such a data processing system for visual acuity are discussed.
