Samenvatting

Reinforced earth bridge abutments were used in the construction of a pedestrian underpass, which forms part of a new distributor road at Stirling, central region. The underpass is 3 m high, 6 m wide and 15 m long; pulverised fuel ash backfill and geogrid reinforcements were used in the structure to minimise settlement on the poor load bearing ground. This report describes the construction procedure used and the application of a novel technique to monitor the strains in the geogrid reinforcement. Performance results are discussed in the context of the design requirements for this type of structure.
