Samenvatting

An analysis is made of the development of traffic safety in the province of Zeeland. The number of fatalities and the number of persons taken to the hospital is less than the average number in The Netherlands. For the people in Zeeland the policy for traffic safety should be aimed at the attack of congestion problems, the construction of cycle tracks, traffic education and information. Drivers in Zeeland are less speeding especially on motorways with a speed limit of 100 km/h and on urban roads with a speed limit of 50 km/h. Also the use of alcohol when driving is less in Zeeland than in the rest of The Netherlands. Safety belts on the rear seat are used more often in Zeeland, and the percentage of cyclists, between the age of 25 and 34, having headlamps on their bicycle is significantly higher. How ever, the accident rate of moped riders is much more in Zeeland than in the rest of The Netherlands.
