Samenvatting

The paper is concerned with the findings of a report on personal safety on Merseyside public transport. Issues already identified by Crime Concern are being incorporated into Merseytravel operational plans, and the Merseyside bus operators and Regional Railways are being encouraged to act upon the report's recommendation. Merseytravel hopes that the review (which has included a large household survey) will identify the extent to which fears for personal safety affect usage of the public transport system and by identifying those areas causing greatest fears or concerns, take positive steps, through its policies and developments, to reduce the problem. It is clear that passengers feel unease in poorly designed or maintained area, or if services are unreliable, or passenger information is inadequate. The need for Merseytravel to work in partnership with other agencies will be important.
