In this paper some findings are presented from the RUIMPAD project (`Spatial patterns and transportation networks in the Netherlands in 2050'). Assumptions with regard to changes in activity patterns of categories of people together with hypotheses on spatial structuring effects of networks and transportation systems played an important role in developing new option urbanisation patterns. A promise for further urbanisation could be within the boundaries of a grid, specifically in the form of a `ladder network'. This paper only deals with the possibilities of a grid network for collective transportation. The existing orientation of collective transportation on the cores of cities needs to be complemented with new fringe connections. This `ladder network' can be regarded as a strategy for spatial development, since it offers room for spatial and functional differentiation on the sides and intersections of the grid.
