PIARC technical committee C1 - surface characteristics.

This article describes the results of research from the C1 technical committee on surface characteristics, and highlights work for the future. Past work has concentrated on friction and texture of pavement surfaces and on evenness, this resulting in the International Roughness Index. The next period, 2001-2003, is divided into four working groups: to measure surface characteristics of pavements; to understand better the connection between vehicles, tyres and pavement surface; to analyse requirements imposed by road administrative bodies; and to secure production of PIARC's standard measuring tyres for friction measurement.
