After a long period of studies, preparations and decision-making, a pilot network of non-motorized transport tracks will be constructed in a pilot area (Nairobi, Eastlands) as part of a large urban roads rehabilitation programme, carried out by the Kenyan Ministry of Local Government. This paper describes the planning, design concepts, and design choices. The paper also presents a cost benefit assessment, indicating that the pilot network, if managed properly after construction, can give a rate of return on investment of around 30% in direct travel cost savings, plus another 7% in traffic accident savings. (A) The French title of the paper is: "Planification et dessin d'un réseau pilote des pistes pietonnes et cyclables à Nairobi, Kenya".
