Samenvatting

In recognition of the need for more comprehensive documentation on reversible lane planning, design and management practices, the Transportation Research Board sponsored a synthesis on convertible roadways and lanes. This article focuses on key findings of the synthesis and presents an overview of planning, design and control principles that have been developed for reversible lanes. Anecdotal information collected from interviews and reviews of field applications are included. Examples are used to illustrate the range of practices and to highlight locally adopted techniques that are particularly effective and/or innovative. Findings show that although reversible lanes and roadways have had a lengthy and varied history, few evaluations of true benefits and costs have been conducted. Agencies responsible for the design and management of reversible lanes generally regard them as safe and efficient and drivers appear to adapt to reversible flow quite easily. However, more information is needed on most aspects of reversible lanes, including design, control and evaluation.
