Samenvatting

This paper presents concerns of blind and vision-impaired people when they travel. It focuses on the alleviation or minimisation of hazards on footpaths, as well as the installation of audible traffic signals. The paper recognises the need for the involvement of organisations such as the National Federation of Blind Citizens of Australia at the planning stages of any road construction and redevelopment, including footpaths. It emphasises that provisions made for blind and vision-impaired people also benefit other less able members of the community such as children, older citizens and those persons with other disabilities.
