Samenvatting

A key project of the Cycling Strategist at the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources is development of Planning Guidelines for Walking & Cycling. The Guidelines aim to assist urban planners to prioritise walking and cycling in key areas of their work. They will be assisted by related policies and actions within the Department and other agencies. Work to date has revealed that there is increasing recognition of the importance of walking and cycling in planning, resulting in increasing planning policy support and good practice examples. There are however trends such as increasing car use that show there is much work to be done. In particular, there are opportunities for greater integration of supportive policies and for more consistent application of these policies across all areas of planning.
