Samenvatting

This issue of Current Topics in Transport includes over 80 abstracts of some of the published literature (reports, conference papers, books and journal articles) on transport policies and initiatives to improve the safety and attractiveness of the pedestrian and cyclist environment. While the focus is mainly on the United Kingdom and the USA, some examples of initiatives in other countries (especially Scandinavia) have also been included. Subjects covered include the assessment, planning, design and operation of cyclist and pedestrian safety schemes, such as cycle paths (including the UK national cycle network), junction design, pedestrian crossings; pedestrian and cyclist behaviour, and government policies to encourage cycling and walking as viable transport modes. The items have been selected from the material added to the Transport Research Laboratory's Library Database between 1993 and 1997. Much of the relevant English language literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Road Research Documentation (IRRD) database.
