Samenvatting

Peak-period flows at transport interchanges put the greatest pressure on the physical layout of the station and its ability to manage and process passengers without serious congestion. A well-planned physical environment critically affects operational effectiveness, passenger safety and security, as well as the commercial appeal of the site. Pedestrian simulation modelling has been applied at selected rail stations in South Africa to map and model pedestrian movements, and has helped to determine optimum layouts as major upgrades are proposed. This paper reviews the methods applied and the case study applications, and it proposes the value of such techniques in the overall quest for improved local passenger transport effectiveness. (A) The French title of the paper is: "Planification pour piétons : elaboration d'environnements accueillants, sûrs et économiquement viables pour stations de transport".
