This paper describes changes in transport mode usage and out-of-home activities occurring within the metropolitan area since the mid 1990s, as well as underlying changes in socio-demographics and other factors. The study is largely based on analyses of data from the Victorian Activity and Travel Survey (VATS), compiled by the Transport Research Centre at RMIT, for the period 1994 to 1999. The paper identifies emerging trends of relevance to public transport planning over the next couple of decades. Of particular importance is whether broader societal trends are likely to work for or against an expanded role for public transport. This is highly pertinent in view of the State Government's stated target of increasing public transport's share of motorised travel to 20 percent by 2020.
