Samenvatting

Fibre optic variable message signs (VMSs) have high illumination performance, and require little maintenance. This article shows how advances in plastic fibre optics now offer improved conduction efficiency, reduced light losses, and greater tolerance to mishandling. Following the unsuccessful attempts of OeBB (Austrian Railways) to use glass fibre optic signals with an external lamp and a light radiation range of several meters, the Austrian company Zelisko has developed a rail signal system with plastic fibre optics. The article describes the system applied to roadside VMSs, including: (1) VMSs for urban areas, motorways, and highways, with optical diameters of 1-5mm, adapted to user requirements; (2) 90mm and 210mm diameter signs for railway lines; (3) freely programmable fibre optic displays of 7 x 5 characters; and (4) fibre optic technology components.
