This article focuses on the role of police in monitoring impaired driving of both alcohol and drugs. A small-scale pilot was set up to explore combined enforcement and monitoring of both alcohol and drug use in traffic. This topic is very relevant today since both alcohol and drug use are major risk factors in traffic, and especially the combined use of alcohol and drugs is associated with high crash risk. The main aim of the study was to get an idea of the relative proportions of drug and alcohol offenders in traffic over weekdays and weekend days. It also explores police experience and perceptions concerning an approach where on separate locations individual drivers are randomly stopped and screened for both alcohol and drugs.
