This paper considers the current policy on pedestrian mobility management in Italy. It describes briefly the governmental and administrative frameworks in position, and the legislative framework, which includes factors not concerned with pedestrian mobility; urban development law; mobility management rules such as urban traffic plans; and quality of life issues, including accessibility, liveability, timetable administration, environment and security. The background and current situation on road safety issues is set out, especially as part of urban planning. General guidelines exist about the protection of vulnerable road users, which can benefit all people, and work towards a national road safety plan is outlined. Some issues of infrastructure improvement for safety are given. Other areas of urban mobility plans are parking, the introduction of a mobility manager for larger companies, and environmental protection. Brief notes on financing are presented, in particular for cyclist mobility; and the paper ends with some of the barriers to mobility and the potential for public interventions to improve the situation.
