This paper describes the construction and use of porous cement concrete in urban areas. Urban porous pavements (UPPs) act to store and channel water runoff and to absorb vehicle noise and reduce its emission. Specifications have been set for UPPs concerning the structure, the porosity of the materials involved and the thickness of the porous wearing course. UPPs are known as reservoir pavements as they hold back storm water to avoid flooding the sewer. The design of porous cement pavements involves mathematical calculation, environmental function and hydraulic design. Acoustic function tested so far has been similar to that of porous asphalt but the mix design can be improved. Further research is required in testing porous concrete in heavily trafficked areas.
