Samenvatting

In some of the outskirts of a city it is too expensive to install an attractive public transport system. So people often have to cover distances of more than one km on foot to reach a bus or tram stop. In such cases it would be helpful if car drivers take potential public transport users to the stop. To reduce the fear of getting into trouble in case of an accident, an insurance should be effected by the city government. In imitation of "park and ride" it is suggested to term this special form of car pooling "shake and ride". The main aim of this system should be to attract car drivers to public transport. The potential of such a system was investigated in two districts of the city of Graz with further use of a stated Graz with further use of a stated preference method. To consider that people's decisions depend on decisions of others, members of the family were asked to reorganise the daily trip programme. The survey was carried out in the form of more than one hour in-depth interviews during which all trips of a special day were discussed. The analysis of the investigation showed that about three percent of all trips in two investigated districts were converted by "shake and ride". 0.8% of all trips were former car driver trips which would be shifted to shake and ride. Most of the remaining "shake and ride" trips were trips of public transport passengers who went to the stop on foot over a long distance.
