Samenvatting

This study investigates whether the Dutch Bicycle Masterplan's objective for increased train usage is feasible. Another purpose of the study is to gain an insight into the effects on the rise of other public transport. It appears that combined bicycle and public transport use can make a significant contribution to public transport improvement. The bicycle substantially increases the catchment area of the existing public transport network. The potential growth in public transport and possible reduction in car traffic can be further boosted by improvements in the public transport and the cycling network. A real transition to public transport depends on the availability of a bicycle for final transport and storage facilities. At the same time a reliable, quick and frequent public transport system will have to be available or be introduced. Government authorities and public transport companies have to play a role in the realisation of good bicycle facilities at stops and stations. Stimulating bicycle use can offer the public transport companies opportunities for advantages in the field of business economics. For employers and public transport companies, supplying bicycles is one of the possibilities within the framework of transport management.
